In traditional medicine, thyme, also called Sa'tar, is considered warm and dry and has been used to balance cold, moist temperaments. Traditional practice recommends it for coughs, respiratory infections, bloating and digestive problems, citing antiseptic, anti-inflammatory and expectorant properties. Works such as Tuhfat al-Mu'minin and Qarabadin Kabir describe it as a stomach tonic, an aid to digestion and a remedy for menstrual pain. Avicenna's Canon of Medicine also mentions antimicrobial and healing properties. Because of its warming nature, excessive consumption may cause dryness and stomach irritation; moderate use is therefore advised, especially for people with a warm temperament.
