What is Moroccan Tea?
Moroccan tea is a blend of Chinese green tea (usually Gunpowder), fresh mint, and sugar, brewed in a specific way and served in small decorative glasses. This beverage is consumed throughout the day and at any party, business meeting, or family event.
Key Ingredients and Ratios
Ingredient Amount (for 4 people) Description
Gunpowder Green Tea 1 tablespoon Chinese Gunpowder green tea
Fresh Mint 1 large bunch Moroccan Mint – aromatic and fresh
Sugar 3 to 5 tablespoons (or more!) Regular white sugar
Boiling Water 1 liter Fresh, high-quality water
💡 Tip: Moroccan tea is served very sweet. It usually contains a lot of sugar, and this high sweetness is one of its distinctive features.

👨‍🍳 Preparation Method (Traditional)
Step 1: Washing the Tea
1. Place the special teapot (Berrad/Tinine) on heat and pour some boiling water into it.

2. Empty the teapot and add the Gunpowder green tea into it.

3. Pour one glass of boiling water over the tea, wait a few seconds, then discard the water. This reduces dust and bitterness from the tea.

Step 2: Initial Brewing
1. Pour enough boiling water over the tea to completely cover it.

2. Let it brew for 1 to 2 minutes.

3. Do not discard the water (unlike the previous step).

Step 3: Adding Sugar and Mint
1. Add sugar and stir until dissolved.

2. Place the bunch of fresh mint (with stems) into the teapot.

3. Add the remaining boiling water and let it brew for another 3 to 5 minutes.

Step 4: Foaming and Serving
1. Pour the tea from a high height into a glass and return it to the teapot.

2. Repeat this several times to create a soft, uniform foam on the tea.

3. Finally, pour into small glasses from a height of 20 to 30 cm to create foam.

4. Each glass should have about one-third foam!

🎭 Culture of Serving Moroccan Tea
Served three times: Each time has a proverb:

1. First glass: "Bitter as life"

2. Second glass: "Sweet as love"

3. Third glass: "Soft as death"

Hospitality: Refusing tea in Morocco is considered an insult. Always drink at least one glass.

The guest is the most deserving person to be served tea first.
